Problem

Many contemporary couches prioritize minimal aesthetics over emotional comfort. In shared spaces—studios, libraries, dorms, and galleries—seating often feels exposed, rigid, or impersonal, discouraging users from fully relaxing or staying for extended periods. Design question: How might seating create a sense of comfort, enclosure, and play without fully isolating the user from their surroundings?

Solution

The Egg Couch is a conceptual furniture piece that reimagines seating as a semi-enclosed, playful, and emotionally comforting experience. Inspired by the protective softness of an egg shell and the social nature of lounging, the project explores how form, material, and scale can encourage relaxation, conversation, and a sense of safety in shared or public spaces. This case study documents the design process from initial insight through prototyping and reflection, with a focus on human-centered design and experiential comfort.

The final design is a curved, egg-shaped couch with a continuous shell that cradles users from the back and sides while remaining open at the front.

But Here We Are

This is what I think

A playful exploration of comfort, humor, and form. The Egg Couch reimagines everyday furniture as a whimsical statement piece, balancing absurdity and functionality. Inspired by the simplicity of an egg’s shape, it invites users to sink into a space that feels both cozy and delightfully offbeat.
